IELTS/TOEFL Vocabulary Builder: destitute, vagabond, emancipate, flamboyant, maxim

Hello Everyone!

Today we are doing another advanced vocabulary lesson and I have to say the vocabulary today are quite difficult! I hope that the video helps you all understand the meanings better!

Here are the vocabulary we covered today:

Destitute

Adjective:

Without the basic necessities of life. Having nothing.

I gave some coins to some destitute children on the street.

 

Vagabond

Noun: A person who wanders from place to place without a home or job.

In the 1970s in the United States many hippies were vagabonds.

 

Emancipate:

Verb: To set free, especially from legal, social, or political restrictions, or slavery.

In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves in the United States.

 

Flamboyant

Adjective: (of a person or their behavior) tending to attract attention because of their exuberance, confidence, and stylishness.

Pop singers usually dress flamboyantly on the stage.

 

Maxim

Noun: A general truth or a rule of conduct.

The maxim of happiness is that you should want what you have, and have what you want.
